100 reasons to celebrate

A Heanton Nursing Home resident who has celebrated his 100th birthday says his wonderful sense of humour and the odd tipple of whisky is the reason for his long and happy life.

Kenneth Hooper, who was born in Lynton, North Devon, before settling in Barnstaple with his wife Marjorie and his only child, Elizabeth, enjoyed a glass of champagne while opening his telegram from the Queen.

The great-grandfather was very pleased to receive the telegram on his milestone birthday – although it isn’t the first he has received one from Her Royal Highness.

Kenneth and his late wife received a telegram for his 70th wedding anniversary. He was married for 74 years on September 2nd 2010.

Mr Hooper, who celebrated his centenary year at the award-winning home surrounded by four generations of his family, was treated to a buffet lunch and two cakes which were made by the home’s chef.

Mr Hooper’s daughter, Elizabeth, told us that her dad had a great birthday surrounded by his family.

She said: “Dad had a great 100th birthday and had lots of nice presents from us all. He really enjoyed his buffet and champagne and balloons which covered the conservatory.

“I am really grateful to the care home staff who went out of their way to give him a great birthday bash.”
