Popular Hatherleigh ‘Memory Café’ celebrates 1st anniversary

A Memory Café at the award-winning Hatherleigh Care Village has celebrated its first anniversary during Dementia Awareness Week.

Dementia is a term used to describe the onset of symptoms such as low attention span, memory loss, depression, mental confusion and difficulty with planning and concentration.

The Café at the £10 million development helps support people with dementia and their family and carers as well as providing peer support, information and opportunities to take part in various activities ranging from skittles to card making.

Throughout the celebration staff, residents and guests were entertained by the Dolton Singers while enjoying home-made cakes and party food.

Care Home manager Lesley Cole said: “The Memory Café at Hatherleigh Care Village provides a place where members of the public, who feel that they or a person they know may have a short term memory problem can drop in without an appointment.

“It also provides an opportunity for residents of Hatherleigh Care Village and their relatives to meet with local people and share experiences and information.

“So far the café has proven to be very popular and it’s really good to get to know the public and offer our help to them on an informal basis.”

The Memory Café meets 2pm – 4pm on the first Tuesday of every month at Hatherleigh Care Village. For more information, contact Ann Crawford on 01837 840562 or email at arc.southtawton@virgin.net.
