Heanton Residents enjoy St. Davids Day

Staff and residents at the award-winning Heanton Nursing Home enjoyed a day of fun when they celebrated St David’s Day.

The fun-filled day at the 52 bed home in Barnstaple was enjoyed by all the residents including Welsh native Glenys Phillips.

Throughout the day the excited residents helped decorate Welsh flags while enjoying a slice of a home-made cake which boasted a design of a Welsh dragon flag.

Dedicated staff also put on dvds for the residents to enjoy along with lemonade, popcorn and melt in the mouth prawn and cheese snacks.

Nursing home manager, Jo Rutherford, said: “The St David’s Day event was fun for all the residents who got involved. They especially enjoyed decorating the Welsh Flags and eating the cakes.

“It is very important to us to provide stimulating activities for our residents and events such as this prove to be very popular.”
Saint David’s Day is the feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, and falls on 1st March each year.

The date of 1st March was chosen in remembrance of the death of Saint David on that day in 589, and has been celebrated by followers since then.

The date was declared a national day of celebration within Wales in the 18th century.
