Lads And Lassies Of Angela Court Join Burns’ Night Celebrations

Residents of Angela Court Nursing Home joined in with Scots men and women all over the world this week in celebrating Burns Night, the annual commemoration of Scottish national poet, Robert Burns.

Burns Night, which falls on January 25, follows a strict pattern, which was keenly observed by residents of the 37-bed home.

The Burns meal traditionally begins with the Selkirk Grace, said to usher in the first course of the meal, cock-a-leekie soup. Then it was time for the main event – the haggis hunt, prepared by the home’s chefs, with bashed neeps.

With Home Manager Bob Allan leading the procession to the sound of traditional Scottish music residents and their families enjoyed reading poems and information on Burns.

The lunch was rounded off with servings of Tipsy Laird, a variety of sherry trifle, and the traditional ‘Toast to the Lassies’, originally designed to thank the women who had prepared the meal.

Bob, who organised the celebrations with activities coordinator Hazel Tribble, thanked the residents’ friends and families for the contribution they had made to the event.

He told us “It’s really great to see friends and family making the effort to celebrate Burns Night with us, doing everything from helping to decorate the dining room to lending their voices on the day to recite Burns’ poems.”
